The romantic name is an overstatement—these islets number in the hundreds, not the thousands—but the unspoiled beauty of this 35,000-acre mangrove ecosystem cannot be overstated. Visitors accessing the national wildlife refuge by boat marvel at the rich diversity of native species, with more than 200 varieties of fish among the sea grass beds and mangrove roots, and nearly the same number of bird species above water. Bottle-nosed dolphins and manatees make entertaining cameo appearances.
